Through a series of short readings, students investigate class structure and the influence of Confucian social values in Tokugawa Japan. A graphic organizer helps students collect and record key information about each class and its place in the social hierarchy. Then, in small groups, students work together to investigate one social class more deeply, presenting their findings to the rest of the class.
