This essay refutes the common misconception that “I” should not be used in formal writing. Used prudently, first person can improve theoretical and rhetorical elements (e.g., objectivity, clarity, organization). Examples of academic prose that illustrates these rhetorical concepts are provided, as well as some hypothetical writing tasks where “I” might work and where it should not be used.
