This 5:03 video discusses how a team at NASA is using hypersonic inflatable aerodynamic decelerators, or HIAD, to solve the aerodynamic heating challenges of entering an atmosphere. It explains the problem created by heat generated when spacecraft enter an atmosphere, and the different ways scientists have solved these problems. Students learn about HIAD’s unique thermal protection system that uses known technology, such as Kevlar, in new ways.
