This site explores Washington D.C. during the Civil War (1860–1865) as a case study for many disciplines, examining how the war impacted the city. Materials draw from varied disciplines—such as literary studies, history, and geography—and explore many genres of information, such as census records, documents from troops, doctors, laborers, and fugitive slaves. With a focus on the evolution of the city during this era, students can also learn about a location’s change over time.
