Students begin this lesson by writing a 2–3 paragraph essay entitled “Why Photograph War?” They then proceed to view, analyze, and discuss photographs taken during the Civil War. The lesson closes by having students return to their original essay and develop it into a longer piece that reflects how analyzing war photographs might have influenced their thinking.
