This political cartoon shows members of Congress attempting to forcefully push the Crittenden Compromise through the Republican “lockjaw” of anti-slavery. The Crittenden Compromise sought to avert the Civil War by constitutionally protecting slavery. This could be used as a lesson starter or mid-lesson.
