This “Defining Identities in Short Fiction by Kate Chopin” essay project is a good stand-alone activity for teaching analysis of short fiction, how to develop a thesis, and writing a short analytical/comparative essay. All four stories by Chopin are short and accessible to college freshmen (and levels beyond), and the essay requirements are modest. It could be used as an early semester essay project to gauge students’ analytical and essay-writing abilities.
