The “Frederick Douglass’s “Narrative:” Myth of the Happy Slave” lesson consists of two activities that should be used together. In this lesson, students analyze Douglass’s firsthand account to see how he successfully contrasts myths with the reality of life under slavery. This lesson assumes that students have some knowledge about slavery in the United States.
