This site examines the steps involved in meiosis, a process in which a parent cell divides to produce cells with half the genetic material of the parent. The model used in the animation contains two pairs of chromosomes. Both of the pairs are color coded to distinguish between the maternal and paternal chromosomes. This allows one to visualize the process of independent assortment and crossing over. This animation includes a narrated version and a step-through version with a series of steps. There is also a quiz section that allows one to answer four questions relating to the meiosis animation.
