New high-stakes tests such as the PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers) are interactive and require students to be able to answer several questions within in one problem using drop-down menus, drag and drop, etc. Wisewire’s TEIs (tech-enhanced items) allow students to practice this. At a cognitive level, students need to be able to work problems from a “big picture” perspective instead of in separate pieces. 

The hints and feedback allow students an opportunity to learn during the process of being assessed. Students may not know the answer and are reminded of what to do. In one example, the hint tells them to use the entire sample space, which addresses the common mistake of dividing by partial parts of the table instead. The second hint goes into more details and actually shows them how to do one, which will give them a chance now to complete the rest of the table.

The integration of authentic stimuli, real-world examples, and scenarios allows the students to think about math outside of the math classroom. Students are able to comprehend and understand the problem from a realistic perspective and make “math sense” out of the problem.
