A is for Amphibians presents a nonfiction reading opportunity for children ages 5 – 8. Amphibian physiology is introduced to children in answer to the question, “How long can frogs hold their breath?” A conversational tone is used to convey STEM vocabulary and academic language while introducing children to ponds and their inhabitants. Additionally, an unstructured play environment is provided, programmed in 3D, where children can “swim” through and around a pond while discovering factoids about the environment’s flora and fauna. An in-depth exploration of Frogs of the World is yet another option of the app. A is for Amphibians also includes traditional games, whereby children use vocabulary learned in other portions of the app for successful game play. A is for Amphibians is free to download.
